Studying the Armor of God in Ephesians highlights the necessity to be acutely aware of the spiritual warfare we battle described in CS Lewis' The Screwtape Letters.

Together we'll examine:

The Book

The Characters

The Bible

 The Process

The Example

Then you'll be well-prepared to study Lewis' classic work.

Finally be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

- Ephesians 6: 10

Screwtape The Book

These letters were originally published in The Guardian (1941), a weekly religious newspaper.

Lewis was influenced by these related 17th-century works when writing The Screwtape Letters.

Lewis dedicated this book to his fellow Inkling and colleague, J. R. R. Tolkien.

Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm

against the schemes of the devil.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,

but against the rulers, against the powers,

against the world forces of this darkness,

against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

- Ephesians 6: 11 - 12

Screwtape Characters

Screwtape is writing to his Nephew, Wormwood, who is trying to cause The Patient to sin.

In this book, written from the devil's perspective, The Enemy is God and Our Father is Satan.

Then Elisha prayed and said,

“O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.”

And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw;

and behold, the mountain was full of horses

and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

- 2 Kings 6:17

Screwtape Bible

Keep in mind the FULL armor of God so that you will STAND firm.

As we struggle and wrestle in this world, we need the TRUTH of Scripture.

Ponder this Ephesians passage, knowing there is a spiritual realm at battle (2 Kings 6:17).

Screwtape Armor of God

Belt of Truth: Our integrity which is based on God's Truth and holds the armor together

Breastplate of Righteousness: Protects our heart

Shoes with the Gospel of Peace: Our actions that coincide with God's Word

Shield of Faith: Provides protection to extinguish the evil one's flaming arrows

Helmet of Salvation: Protects our mind

Sword of the Spirit: The Word of God, our offensive weapon

Prayer: Earnest, on behalf of God's people, through the power of the Holy Spirit

Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth,

and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which

you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 And take the helmet of salvation,

and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

- Ephesians 6: 14 - 17
